Here’s why a pair of black trainers could be your most versatile buy ever

Just like the LBD or a pair of black jeans, black trainers can carry you anywhere in style. While we love a box-fresh pair of white trainers, black trainers are infinitely chicer and definitely more versatile. The darker shade certainly helps them suit any fashion situations that would usually call for shoes.

Black trainers’ versatility depends on the overall style of course, but a simple rule is that the plain and more plimsoll-like the shape, the more they can stand in for shoes when you’d rather dress in something cooler and comfortable. The Row’s minimal leather pair would work perfectly with a slouchy trouser suit and a tank top as would Dune’s quilted leather style or Ugg’s suede version.

When taking your trainers out and about, it’s all about the high / low mix. Of course you can team your trainers with a tracksuit or sweat shorts – and pretty cool you’d look too – but if you want to add an element of surprise to your everyday ‘fits think about shaking things up with the rest of what you’re wearing.

A pair of designer trainers will be ideal to *zhuj* up your *lewk* for any trips to a pub garden, picnics with pals or hitting up the dance floor with a cute dress (June 21st, we are coming for you.) Then very sporty pairs, like Acne Studio’s streamlined style or Buffalo’s iconic platform, look surprising and cool with floaty dresses and ultra-feminine pieces. Although we wouldn’t recommend actually running in them… you can check out our edit of trainers you can run in here, instead.

The Campo style from Veja have become synonymous with conscious consumption. The brand focus on transparency, fair trade and take their environmental responsibility seriously – The Duchess of Sussex is a fan. And if your priority is to shop for something with a lower impact on the planet, Pangaia’s black trainers are made from grape leather uppers and recycled rubber soles.

Trainers with an old school feel – like Van’s skater-approved high tops, New Balance’s 237 or the Adidas Gazelle – are influencer faves for their low-fi appeal although. Whichever style you go for, they’ll make strides into elevating your Spring style, we promise.
