Here’s what’s *actually* going on with your Instagram Stories (and how you can fix it)

Okay, who’s officially fed up with Instagram forcing you to watch the same stories you’ve already viewed? Our hands are firmly raised.

If you think you’re having a severe case of déjà vu when logging onto Instagram this week, you are not alone, as many people have been frustrated at seeing repeat content.

Under normal circumstances, if our friends upload a new story, we view it before swiftly moving on to the next one. However, since June 14, a new bug means that if a friend posts a new story, we have to first trawl through all the Stories they have uploaded in the last 24 hours – which we have already seen.

You can imagine how infuriating that is when your favourite influencer posts a new story, but we have to first make our way through the 23 posts of her idyllic holiday that she has already shared beforehand. It’s just an endless loop of repeat content.

If you thought you were the only one going through this, then you aren’t. Many have taken to Twitter to vent their frustration. One person wrote: “Anyone elses instagram stories being weird?? i keep having to view the same ones i ALREADY VIEWED!!! it’s p***ing me off omfg.”

A second added: “Is it just me or is Instagram stories showing the same stories on repeat? I’m literally so bored doom tapping.”

Another echoed: “Anyone else’s Instagram stories not disappearing i keep seeing the same 10 people’s stories on repeat. I am ANNOYED.”

Why are Instagram Stories repeating on a loop?

The leading cause of Instagram Stories playing on repeat is due to a new glitch caused by a new update, according to an Instagram subreddit. Apparently, the glitch causes the app not to remember where someone left off in the friends’ stories so it starts from the beginning.

Another cause could be due to the malfunctioning of the new parental control introduced by Meta, in which they can control teens’ time online and monitor their digital well-being. This reason has yet to be confirmed.

How can you correct the problem?

Instagram rolled out an update on June 15, which takes the iOS Instagram app to version 239.1, and can be used to fix the glitch.

It says that the new version “contains bug fixes and performance improvements” – however, there is no directed mention of correcting repeat stories. However, The Verge reported that the update fixes it.

So, if you’re sick of seeing the same content over and over again, download the latest app update from the App Store, and your stories should go back to normal. Thank goodness for that!

A representatives for Meta added to GLAMOUR: “Earlier today, some people were having trouble accessing Instagram Stories. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologise for any inconvenience!”
