Micellar water is coming for your dry shampoo, according to TikTok

Tired of the flakiness and grittiness you get from dry shampoo? TikTok has a new hack for you, involving your humble micellar water.

Makeup artist and YouTuber Tati Westbrook posted in a “Beauty Hacks” video that she actually uses micellar water instead of dry shampoo on her hair to help prolong the “bounciness and freshness” of her hair – especially after working out.

Micellar water – used mostly as a makeup remover – has been making rounds recently in the haircare industry for its oil controlling and cleansing properties. Micellar water is made up of ‘micelles’ which are tiny cleansing balls, which float in the water. They attract oil and dirt and draw them away from the skin when used. So it makes sense that it could be used to cleanse hair.

Tati says that using an oil free or oil-reducing micellar water for this method is essential. She personally uses the Bioderma Sébium Cleansing Micellar Water for Blemish-Prone Skin (aka the green one) for this method. She says to saturate the roots of your hair and hairline with the micellar water, either with a cotton pad or by using a spray bottle. She then says she “shoots” hot air onto her hair with a blow dryer and combs through it with a round brush.

And voila! You have refreshed silky smooth hair!

The video, originally posted in December 2023 has started to make rounds on TikTok again recently, and people are absolutely loving the hack. One commenter on YouTube said “Tati, the oil-reducing micellar water for dirty hair tip is GENIUS!! I’ve always hated how gritty dry shampoo makes my hair feel. I will be trying this out tomorrow!!!” Another praised Tati for “doing the Lord’s work”

We’re now seeing micellar water being used in hair care products and conditioners, such as the Evolve Organic Beauty Deep Clean Micellar Water and the Wella Professionals Nutricurls Micellar Shampoo for Curls.
