In news that literally none of us saw coming, it’s been revealed that Samantha Jones – AKA the beating heart of Sex and the City – will apparently be making an appearance in the second season of the reboot, And Just Like That.
During an interview with Variety, Michael Patrick King (one of And Just Like That‘s showrunners) seemingly confirmed that Samantha Jones will indeed be making a return to the franchise. After being asked if Carrie and Samantha’s characters will still be texting in season two of And Just Like That, Michael responded “Yes.”
He also reflected on what Samantha and Carrie might have talked about in the season finale of season one of And Just Like That, saying, “It’s very funny, because every single one of the writers has a different version of what happened during that conversation.
“So, I think there was some Champagne. I think there was a grownup back and forth, and a love affair that they realized that something’s more important than being afraid to heal. I’m sure they had a great night. To me, they had a great night and things became resolved. Once Carrie let go of an old, old love, one of her current loves came back in.”
On 7 June, People reported that Michael also said in the interview (with regard to Samantha’s character returning), “It’s all so new right now […]One of my big rules is don’t tell things until they’re real,” adding that, “My goal is to bring all the characters into the mix together, so that they’re not so much on separate runways.”
As of today (10 June), this quote doesn’t appear in the article.
Kim Cattrall, who originally played Samantha Jones, has previously made it clear that she does not want to return to the franchise. During an interview with Variety in May 2022, Kim said, “It’s a great wisdom to know when enough is enough […] I also didn’t want to compromise what the show was to me. The way forward seemed clear.”
She later added,“This feels like an echo of the past.…I loved [Samantha]. I loved her so, so, so much. It’s tough competition. The original show is in all of our imaginations. But for me, it feels clean.”
Sarah Jessica Parker, AKA the one-and-only Carrie Bradshaw, has also indicated that she wouldn’t be too chuffed to see Kim Cattrall rejoin the cast.
In an interview with Variety, SJP was asked how she’d feel about Kim reprising the role of Samantha, to which she responded, “I don’t think I would, because I think there’s just too much public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared,” adding that she hasn’t “participated in or read articles, although people are inclined to let [her] know.”
Michael Patrick King had also previously ruled out Kim returning to the show, telling Variety, ““Magically thinking, it’s great to have Samantha,” before noting, “I have no realistic expectation of Kim Cattrall ever appearing again.”
Anyone else feeling more-than-a-little confused, RN? Oh well, no matter what capacity Samantha returns in – whether it’s more texts or in her full Kim Cattrall glory, we can’t wait to watch it all unfold…
