Cara Delevingne opens up about her decision to proudly display her psoriasis at the Met Gala

Cara Delevingne, who will soon be seen in season 2 of the series Only Murders in the Building, was in the media after the Met Gala – and not just because of her fairly naked outfit (yes, she was topless).

Another detail has caused a stir, which she has rarely shown so present before: her psoriasis. We thought that was seriously empowering, and that’s exactly why we asked her why she decided to take this step. And we found her answer almost even better.

Cara Delevingne shows a lot of skin and her psoriasis at the Met Gala 2022

On May 2, the Met Gala 2022 took place under the theme “Gilded Glamour” and Cara Delevingne was also part of the party. Her whole body was wrapped in gold, only her tattoos and just her skin condition were left out – and therefore more visible.

Some quick background info on psoriasis: it’s a common skin disease that affects an estimated 1.1 million people (1.7% of the population) in the UK, according to researchers at The University of Manchester and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. The chronic inflammatory skin disease can occur on different parts of the body, to varying degrees, and can come and go in cycles lasting weeks or months. Psoriasis causes red and itchy scaly patches on the skin, most commonly on the knees, elbows or scalp.

That’s why Cara Delevingne is proud of her skin disease today

Yes, Cara Delevingne also suffers from psoriasis. Even though she has never made a secret of it, she rarely flaunts her skin disease. But at the Met Gala she had the opportunity to do so and took advantage of it, as she revealed to GLAMOUR Germany in an interview: “I’ve always talked about my psoriasis, so it wasn’t new. But I’ve never been more naked in public and showing my psoriasis there was just overwhelming. I didn’t realise at first what that would mean.”

Because one thing’s for sure, she could have easily covered up her psoriasis with the gold, but she decided against it – and for a good reason: “At first I was like, ‘Wait a minute, I should cover this up, right?’ and then I remembered, though, that it’s not good for my skin and a lot of people live with psoriasis,” Delevingne said.

Not only is it not good for the skin condition to be covered up with products, Cara Delevingne also wanted to give people with psoriasis an important message: “It’s not a beautiful thing to have – but you also have to be proud of it. I’m proud of it in the sense that it’s something that belongs to me. I used to hate my psoriasis, but that only made it worse.” Good for her
