Luther Movie: Here’s Everything You Need To Know

Winner of GLAMOUR’s Women of the Year award for Game-changing Performer Cynthia Erivo – who has starred in many a musical, including The Color Purple and Wicked – will play a rival detective, while Irish actor Dermot Crowley is set to reprise his role as DSU Martin Schenk from the Luther television series.

What’s the plot of the Luther film?

We know that it’s not going to be set in London, that’s for sure. Elba opened up about this and how it opened up the world of Luther in an interview with Empire

“We break out of the gritty streets of London, we take it outside of that a little bit,” he explains. “And that’s great. It feels like now we’re entering a different life of the Luther experience.”

“We really peel the onion back here because we had the time and scale to do that. It also gives Neil [Cross] a lot more, you know, Luther-land to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he goes, what the landscape is.”

Elba has been teasing the existence of a Luther film for quite some time. Back in 2020, he told BAFTA: “With film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines, and a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale.”

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the following synopsis for the film: “[Luther] will have to contend with a double threat. Erivo is playing a detective who is also [his] nemesis while Serkis is the story’s criminal villain.”

What’s the release date for the Luther film?

February 24 in cinemas, and then March 10 on Netflix.  So not long AT ALL.
