Jenna Ortega to star in Beetlejuice 2 as Winona Ryder’s daughter

A Beetlejuice sequel has been a possibility for many years, dating all the way back to 1990. The last time Tim Burton shared an update on the potential continuation was in 2016. “It’s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it’s one of those films where it has to be right,” Burton said at the time. It’s not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel]… it’s something that if the elements are right—because I do love the character and Michael’s amazing as that character, so yeah we’ll see.” Looks like the stars have finally aligned.

Rumours of Ortega joining the cast for the sequel first started swirling back in March, but her casting has just now been made official. American actor and filmmaker Justin Theroux is also joining the cast, though details of his role are still a mystery.

If you thought Ortega and Burton were the only two people connecting the worlds of Beetlejuice 2 and Netflix’s Wednesday, you’d be wrong. Screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who also worked with Burton on Wednesday as co-creators, writers, and executive producers, have been tapped to pen the Beetlejuice 2 screenplay. (That, and, you know, the fact that season one of Wednesday already featured an easter egg in honour of Beetlejuice.)

Per Variety, production for Beetlejuice 2 is said to have begun in London on May 10, 2023. Adding to its list of star-studded names, the film is also being produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B company.
