If you weren’t one of the millions who flocked to the cinema to see Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling take their turns as Barbie and Ken in Barbie (or perhaps you were, and you’re just ready for round two), you’re in luck – since the record-breaking movie is now available to watch at home. Yay!
After sparking record numbers of ticket sales in cinemas, Barbie has been swiftly snapped up by a number of platforms so you can continue the Barbiecore fun wherever you like – i.e. dress up in head-to-toe pink for a night on the sofa, with snacks. The dream.
How to watch Barbie at home
So, here’s what you need to know. In the UK, you can currently purchase or rent Barbie on Sky Cinema, Amazon UK, Microsoft Store, Apple TV+ and other digital retailers. The options are kind of endless.
However, we still have no news on when Barbie will be available to stream without purchase or rental costs – i.e. if it will appear on Netflix, or Amazon Prime for example.
In fact, the movie is still currently showing in UK cinemas, proving its lasting popularity, though that exclusivity is now officially over following Barbie‘s move to digital platforms.
Barbie: what you need to know
If you’ve (somehow) managed to miss the Barbie mania, here’s a short catch-up.
Starring the likes of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell and Kate McKinnon, the film takes Barbie as a cultural icon and explores themes of womanhood, consumerism, ageing, gender stereotypes and patriarchy.
In a nutshell, Barbie, who lives in seemingly-perfect, all-smiles Barbieland, finds herself experiencing an existential crisis – she starts having thoughts about death, and her perfectly pointed feet have gone flat. And so, she must journey to the real world to find out what’s made her become unstuck… and in doing so, she learns all about the realities of living as a woman.
