Beyoncé Makes It Official: Drops Trailer For ‘Renaissance’ Concert Movie; Global Theatrical Release Set For Dec. 1

As Deadline told you, AMC is releasing the concert film of Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour on Dec. 1. The 32 Grammy winner released a trailer on her social media channels tonight, making all the heavy buzz official from yesterday. This was expected since it’s the last night of the tour in Kansas City, MO.

Right now, the movie is hitting cinemas in US, Mexico and Canada on Dec 1 with additional offshore cities to be announced. Tickets start at $22 and are currently on sale, and like the Taylor Swift: Eras Tour concert movie, the pic will play at other rival circuits. AMC is releasing the movie in partnership with Beyoncé’s film production co and record label, Parkwood Entertainment. Similar to Eras Tour, AMC is playing Renaissance on the weekends –Thursday, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays– for at least four weeks. New York City based distributor Variance is booking cinemas on behalf of AMC in the US, while Cineplex is booking Canada and Cinepolis is booking Central America and Trafalgar Releasing is handling outside North America.

Titled Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, the pic captures the opening show of the tour in Stockholm, Sweden to its grand finale tonight in Kansas City, MO. The tour received 2.7M fans from around the wrold, and has grossed over half billion dollars.

While the Taylor Swift: Eras Tour is already eyeing a wild opening of $75M-$125M, and at last reported already had $65M in presales from the domestic marketplace and Mexico, some distribution sources are snarking that Renaissance won’t put up the types of tickets sales as Swift. Still, even if this concert movie opens to north of $20M, that’s praiseworthy for the first weekend of December which is a dead zone at the box office following the Thanksgiving holiday. Typically the movies that fare well in that post Thanksgiving/post Black Friday weekend period are holdovers of Disney movies, i.e. Frozen 2 ($35.1M), Frozen ($31.6M), Ralph Breaks the Internet ($25.5M), Moana ($28.2M) and Coco ($27.5M). Currently, Disney is set to go wide with 20th Century Studios Jeff Nichols directed Tom Hardy-Jodie Comer-Austin Butler drama The Bikeriders and Lionsgate has John Woo’s first U.S. movie in 20 years, Silent Night. If presales for Renaissance get hot in the next couple of days, expect these features to possibly movie, which was the case when several pivoted away from Eras Tour‘s Oct. 13 date, the most prolific film being Universal’s The Exorcist: Believer which is now going a week early on Oct. 6.
