Even the best cardigans for women get a bad rap, but, once the bread and butter of your more elderly relatives’ wardrobes, they’re officially back on the radar of some of the world’s best dressed. And we want in.
Spotted as longline chunky-knit cloaks over at Loewe – paired with baggy jeans and ballet pumps, two more of this season’s must-haves – and in pastel bouclé and tweed iterations at Chanel, cardigans are officially the one SS24 trend we didn’t see coming.
Through no fault of their own, we just assumed cardigans for women had sort of… had their moment. Hark back to 2020/2021 when WFH was at its peak, and we rifled through our best knitwear drawers on the daily for something suitable-yet-comfy to wear on Zoom. It was almost always a cardigan on top and some tea-stained joggers on the bottom.
Perhaps through a strong desire to leave that time in the past and get back to ‘normality’ as soon as possible, we haven’t really turned to them since. Until now, that is, when virtually every fashion maven can be seen sporting one.
From tonal greys and go-with-everything blacks and creams, to bold shades of red, pink, green and Mob wife-approved leopard print, the humble cardi is arguably bigger than ever. Some influencers are even sporting the year-round wardrobe staples as tops buttoned up half way and showing a bit of skin or fully fastened, so take notes.
