If you’ve spent the last few months with your eyes closed, you might not have noticed that the fashion world has fallen in love with sheer. Sheer *everything*. And, after many somewhat dubious attempts to jump on the trend, the high street has finally hit the jackpot when it comes to sheer dressing, thanks to one very good Zara skirt.
But before we get to that, let’s rewind.
If you have been keeping an eye on the red carpets over the last couple of months as awards season played out in its usual show-stopping way, you undoubtedly will have spotted several pairs of pants.
No, we’re not going all American on you – we don’t mean trousers.
We mean good old-fashioned knickers, which have been having their moment in the spotlight as some of the world’s most sartorially-risqué stars braved the very extreme end of this trend.
Others, like Emily Blunt at this year’s Golden Globe awards, dared to bare – but only to an extent, as she kept her underwear hidden and just her legs showing from beneath the layers of frothy tulle.
Which is exactly where Zara’s latest iteration comes in.
I’m sure the majority of you will be thrilled to know that you won’t need to invest in a new pair of public-appropriate knickers to wear this sheer number, as Zara’s limited edition skirt subscribes to the Emily Blunt school of thought and keeps those well-and-truly covered.
Perhaps also taking its cues from the latest runways – and, in turn, the street style stars attending said runways – Zara’s take on the trend sees a crucially opaque mini skirt layered beneath the sheer, 100% silk midi, giving that look of a bang-on-trend sheer skirt (minus the raised eyebrows as you cross the street).
Made popular by the likes of Miu Miu and 16Arlington on the most recent rounds of runways, there’s no doubt that the sheer skirt is having a real moment right now.
Whether worn ‘out-out’ à la 16Arlington with a sequin vest and heels, or made more daytime-appropriate with a contrast knitted cardigan and layered cycling shorts like Miu Miu, it’s one of those trends that can be surprisingly versatile.
Let’s maybe just wait for this relentless winter wind to pass completely before we commit to legs out…
