Beyonce among celebrities added to French dictionary

Beyonce will be included as a new entry in the latest edition of the French encyclopaedic dictionary Le Petit Larousse.

The American popstar will feature alongside celebrities including Cate Blanchett, French actor Omar Sy, Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan, and French rugby captain Antoine Dupont in the 120th edition of the popular dictionary.

More than 150 new words have been added this year.

Many “reflect concerns, developments or strong movements this year,” Carine Girac-Marinier, director of the dictionaries and encyclopaedias department, told French news magazine Le Point.

Beyonce broke records this year with her single Texas Hold ‘Em album Cowboy Carter.

She became the first black woman to hit number one on the US country chart with Texas Hold ‘Em.

She also landed her second charts double in the UK, with the single and album both taking the top spot.

It is not the first time Beyonce has left her mark on a dictionary. In 2004, the term “bootylicious” – made popular by Destiny’s Child hit of the same name, co-written by Beyonce – was added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

Beyonce reportedly said she wasn’t “proud” of the word, telling TV Hits magazine: “I wrote the song, but I wish there was another word I could have come up with if I was going to have a word in the dictionary.”

Other new additions to the dictionary include the English phrase “fast fashion”, “platisme” – the French term for Flat Earth theory – and “trottinettiste”, a person who rides a scooter, or “trottinette”.

Cambridge Dictionary declared “hallucinate” as the word of the year for 2023 due to its new, alternative meaning related to AI producing false information.
