The Back to the Future Trilogy – July 1
Michael J. Fox’s energy is unmatched as Marty McFly in Robert Zemeckis’ science fiction trilogy, which also stars Christopher Lloyd as Dr. Emmett Brown, Elisabeth Shue as Jennifer, Lea Thompson as Lorraine McFly, Jeffrey Weissman as George McFly, Tom Wilson as Biff Tannen, Mary Steenburgen as Clara Clayton in Part III. With time eluding many a grasp these days, all three films involve a twisty adventure forward and backward in history which provides nostalgic commentary on how humanity has developed.
The Karate Kid – July 1
Following in the 1984 film’s footsteps, the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid breathes new life into the story of a teacher and his student. Young Jaden Smith plays Dre Parker, who has to move to China for his mom’s (Taraji P. Henson) new job. There, he runs into trouble from a group of boys who take out their strict karate teacher’s instruction on Dre when he falls for one of the girls a member of the rival gang likes. Jackie Chan goes about teaching Dre kung fu as Mr. Han, and he uses unconventional methods. The epic final sequence of the showdown between Dre and rival Cheng (Zhenwei Wang) is enough to watch the film for, but Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith’s post-credits song also solidifies the triumphant ending.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F – July 3
Eddie Murphy reprises his role of Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F 30 years after the original first film in the franchise came out. Featuring snippets of songs from the previous films, Foley is forced to unite with his estranged daughter Jane Saunders (Taylour Paige) as well as Detective Bobby Abbott (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to bust crooked Captain Cade (Kevin Bacon) for trying to frame an innocent man and infiltrate the police force that Foley knows inside and out. Original stars John Ashton, Bronson Pinchot, Judge Reinhold and Paul Reiser also return to the fourth film.
The Man with 1000 Kids – July 3
This Netflix documentary profiles Jonathan Jacob Meijer, a Dutch YouTube personality who has donated sperm worldwide to father a range of children anywhere between 500 and 1000 children. He claimed to have spent 50,000 hours in sperm donation clinics over 15 years. In April 2023, a Dutch court banned Meijer from donating any more sperm due to a civil lawsuit against him. Meijer is also threatening to sue Netflix for the film.
The Imaginary – July 5
The Imaginary marks the third work of Studio Ponoc, an offshoot of Studio Ghibli. The film chronicles the adventures of Rudger (voiced by Kokoro Terada), an imaginary friend of Amanda (Rio Zuzuki) who gets separated from her when Mr. Bunting (Issey Ogata) tries to consume Rudger with his wordless spectral imaginary companion. Rudger does everything to make it back to Amanda, who has recently lost her father, in the animated film, as their promise to each other is to “never disappear.” As joyful and inventive as the film can be, it also deals with existential themes like growing up.
Trolls Band Together – July 15
Trolls Band Together features all kinds of musical genres as the third film in DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls (2016) franchise. All the fan-favorite voices from Anna Kendrick to Justin Timberlake return alongside some new additions — Camila Cabello as Viva, Daveed Diggs as Spruce, Eric André as John Dory, David Fynn as Biggie, Troye Sivan as Floyd and Kid Cudy as Clay. Villains Velvet (Amy Schumer) and Veneer (Andrew Rennells) bring Branch’s (Justin Timberlake) brothers and boyband BroZone back together when they have to save one of their own: Troye Sivan’s Floyd. The film pays homage to all the boy bands that made it big with their music, and *NSYNC even has a small cameo at the end.
