Heretic’s Sophie Thatcher is Jack Quaid’s Android in New Companion Trailer

A new trailer for Companion has been released.

Companion is a new, romantic thriller movie that will be later this month from Warner Bros. Pictures. The movie is helmed by Drew Hancock in his feature film directorial debut.

What happens in the Companion trailer?

The Companion trailer reveals that Heretic’s Sophie Thatcher is playing an android, named Iris, who was made to be Jack Quaid’s character’s girlfriend. The beginning of the trailer hints that this won’t be a happy love story, however, as Iris recalls one of the happiest days of her life was when she killed Quaid’s character, whose name is Josh.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Quaid said that the script to Companion was one of the best that he’s “ever read.”

He added, “I never saw any of the twists coming, but it’s not necessarily a movie that relies on a big reveal, and every reveal was fresh.”

Hancock, who also wrote the screenplay, said of the film, “The silver lining of showing the audience [that] this is a movie about a robot is it’s a way to kind of get ahead of anyone dismissing it as another robot movie. Because it’d be so easy to just be like, ‘This is M3GAN,’ or, ‘This is the Megan Fox movie [Subservience].’ It’s a little different to be like, ‘No, this is a robot movie, but it’s not like any other robot movie that’s out right now.’ It’s not A.I. gone wrong, it’s A.I. gone right.”

Hancock also expressed that Thatcher’s character being an android isn’t a spoiler, as he says the movie “doesn’t really start until that reveal.” He continued, “It’s a movie about self-discovery and, at its core, is a breakup movie about this woman finding empowerment through discovery of self.”

Companion also stars Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend. It will be released in United States theaters and IMAX on January 31, 2025, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
