How Tina Dang Built a Thriving Business in a Competitive Food and Beverage Industry

Starting up in the competitive food and beverage business is tough. It’s packed with uncertainty, potential failure, and the challenge of what comes next.

Tina Dang, founder of Tealux Cafe, moved to the U.S. from Vietnam in 2006, she explored various fields that taught her a diverse skill set that created her ability to adapt and bounce back from challenges.

The transition to the food and beverage industry marked a significant change in Tina’s path. Inspired by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, she founded Tealux in 2020 as a community-oriented and adaptable business.

Since its establishment in June 2021, Tealux Cafe has expanded, becoming an official franchisor by November 2021 and earning a spot on the SBA Franchise Directory by March 2022.

Here are Tina’s tips for establishing a successful food and beverage business:

  1. Unique Value Proposition (UVP):

Identify what makes your establishment unique, whether it’s a signature dish, a theme, exceptional customer service, or a commitment to sustainability. This differentiator should be highlighted in your marketing efforts to attract a niche or broad audience.

Creating a UVP requires understanding your market and competitors. Tina advises conducting thorough market research to identify your target audience and their preferences. By recognizing gaps in the market that your business can fill, you can tailor your offerings to meet customer needs.

At Tealux, Tina’s UVP is “At our cafe, we embody a culture of warmth and integrity, where every customer is welcomed like family. Our commitment to constant innovation and the pursuit of culinary excellence creates an environment where individuals can truly showcase their unique talents and contribute to something greater together.”

  1. Quality Products and Service:

Consistently delivering high-quality food and beverages is paramount. Positive word-of-mouth can significantly impact your business, and investing in quality ingredients while maintaining high standards in food preparation is key.

Training your staff to provide excellent customer service and paying attention to details like cleanliness and ambiance enhances customer satisfaction, turning first-time visitors into loyal customers.

  1. Adaptability:

Staying flexible with your menu to adapt to trends and customer preferences is vital. Additionally, consider accommodating dietary restrictions and preferences to cater to a diverse customer base.

According to a survey, 59% of consumers say they prefer to buy an item when marked as ‘seasonal’ on a restaurant’s menu.

Tina exemplifies adaptability by introducing seasonal drinks, such as ‘Summer,’ the current addition to Tealux’s menu.

  1. Effective Marketing:

Building tailored marketing strategies is essential for connecting with prospective customers. By tapping into digital tools, loyalty perks, and collaborations with hometown heroes, you can boost your brand’s visibility.

Also, recognizing the importance of an online presence, she emphasizes leveraging social media platforms to showcase your offerings, engage with customers, and run promotions.

Collaborating with local businesses, events, or charities can enhance your brand’s presence in the community, building positive relationships and increasing awareness.

In the food and beverage industry, success isn’t easy. It demands an understanding of customer desires, adaptability, and a relentless pursuit of improvement. Tina’s journey, marked by entrepreneurial determination and culinary triumph, is a testament to these principles. Her recipe for success involves not only excellent products and outstanding customer service but also astute business management.
