An aromatherapy shower can take your hair wash to a whole other level

We’ve spent a lot of time in our homes the past year. We know our four walls very well at this point. And while the world is opening back up again, our homes remain a very important sanctuary.

One room in particular offers some indulgent escapism, and that’s our bathroom. It’s the place we can go to wash our troubles down the drain and sing like Mariah into the shower head (sorry, neighbours). But a few slick switches can change your regular shower into the M&S of showers – aka a little more boujee.

Basically, you want to invest in a few key scents that uplift you like no other, then incorporate them into a steamy shower sesh that fills the whole room with that spa-like fragrance.

Our best discovery has been shower steamers. Two words: game changer. Cleverfy’s Aromatherapy Shower Steamers (£19.99) have over 10,000 ratings on Amazon and a legion of dedicated followers. You place the shower tablet on the floor of your shower and it will release a therapeutic aroma into the air while you wash. Just note, placement is everything. Stick it somewhere too dry and it won’t let off any scent, stick it in the full jet stream and it’ll disappear down the drain before the fragrance reaches you. So pop it somewhere that it’ll get splashed but not soaked.

Another trick is to hang eucalyptus from your shower head. As the leaves become warm and wet, they release essential oils that not only smell reinvigorating, but can also decongest your sinuses. By bringing the outside in, they can help add to that feeling of escapism (think a mini forest bathing sesh), plus they win the Insta-grid test, too. There’s loads of bunches to choose from on Etsy, or hit-up your local flower market.

If not, you can stick to shower gels and oils that hit the spot. GLAMOUR’s editor, Deborah Joseph swears by Aromatherapy Associates Revive Morning Bath & Shower Oil, £49. Before you step in the shower, cup a few drops of the oil in your hands and inhale the grapefruit, rosemary and juniper scent deeply three times before massaging it over your body. When you stand under the running water, the warmth and steam will release the vapours into the air, meaning you can enjoy them for longer (they’ll leave your body super soft, too).

You can pair the oil with the matching Revive Shower Oil-To Milk Body Cleanser, £26, or combine other scents you love. We’re obsessed with Aesop’s Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser (£33), Rituals’ Sakura Foaming Shower Gel (£8.50), Weleda’s Aroma Shower Relax Body Wash (£8.25), and Radox’s Mineral Therapy Feel Detoxed Shower Gel (£0.90).
