We don’t know what the current obsession is with making live-action films about childhood plastic toys (looking at you, Polly Pocket movie), but we’re here for it.
Enter: Barbie.
We will admit, that when Warner Brothers first announced Barbie would be undergoing a modern-day makeover in a new live-action film, we didn’t necessarily have high hopes.
In the past, the Barbie doll has garnered widespread criticism for projecting unrealistic body ideals onto young girls, so with the news of a film, we presumed the doll would be reinvented for a progressive, 21st century audience.
But don’t panic, there’s still hope, because Ladybird’s Greta Gerwig is writing the script, together with her long-term partner Noah Baumbach, and if there’s one thing guaranteed with Greta, it’s a female-led film with strong feminist messaging. Oh yes.
“For us, the Barbie movie should definitely have a message of female empowerment, and that you can dream and be anything you want,” Greta asserted back in 2019.
What we know about the film has come a long way since then, as the star-studded cast has just added another beloved name to its roster: Emma Mackey, star of Netflix’s Sex Education.
Saturday Night Live alum, Kate McKinnon, is also joining the cast, which already includes Margot Robbie as Barbie (after Amy Schumer pulled out of the role due to conflicting schedules), and Ryan Gosling as Ken (we SO see it…).
Here’s everything we know about the Barbie film so far, including plot, cast, release date, and trailer.
What is Barbie about?
The plot for the upcoming film is currently anyone’s guess but back in 2021, Margot Robbie herself revealed more details that suggests that all of fans expectations should go out of the window.
