Best Milky Perfumes That Are Every Gourmand Lover’s Dream

The best milky perfumes are the ones that smell almost delectable. If you take one sniff of a creamy scent and wish you could eat or drink it, you may well be smelling a good milk-inspired fragrance.

Known for their warmth and comfort, milky perfumes contain notes that evoke milk or milk-based foods: think creamy deliciousness. These are often paired with other gourmand and smooth accords such as vanilla, marshmallows, caramel or cacao to create the perfect ‘edible’ elixir.

When people ask me what kind of perfumes I favour, I rarely have an answer for them because truthfully, I like a bit of everything. From citrus to florals, my collection is eclectic. But the one category that’s slowly crept up on me and is currently firmly in my good books are milky perfumes, which have become a real comfort while on the road as a recently-converted digital nomad. Being away from my friends and family, these scents smell like home, and feel as though you’re being enveloped in the arms of a loved one while wearing a cosy, soft sweater.

My current favourite – as you will soon discover – is DedCool’s Milk, but I am a big fan of other lactose-inspired fragrances, from Molton Brown’s decadent bottle to Phlur’s unexpected floral hit.

Why are milky perfumes so popular right now?

“There’s something inherently comforting and soothing about creamy and milky notes, they evoke a sense of warmth and cosiness,” says Chriselle Lim, Founder & Creative at Phlur.

“There’s also a nostalgic element to milky perfumes, like an emotional connection to them. They remind me of cherished memories, like the smell of freshly baked goods or a gentle hug from a loved one,” she continues.

Perhaps another reason they’re so big right now is their versatility; while they are cosy and comforting in winter, they really can be worn any time of year or for any occasion. “In general, I would say milky perfumes are quite adaptable,” says Chriselle. “They’re sophisticated enough for formal events, providing a soft, elegant backdrop that doesn’t overpower. At the same time, they offer a sense of warmth and approachability that’s ideal for casual gatherings or intimate evenings.”

How can you layer milky perfumes?

Chriselle expands: “To add a touch of sophistication and elegance, try pairing milky perfumes with woody and spicy notes; think sandalwood, cedar, or a hint of cardamom. These notes add depth and complexity that makes the fragrance feel rich and luxurious.”

She does however note that she would “avoid strong, sharp notes like heavy leathers or very green, herbaceous scents,” as these can “clash with the creamy smoothness of a milky perfume.”
