Demi Lovato reveals they sought treatment before writing their new album ‘Clean and Sober’

Ahead of Demi Lovato’s eighth studio album Holy Fvck, the singer has released a new single titled “Skin of My Teeth.”

During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Demi performed the new song for the first time and discussed its rock and roll sound. “It’s definitely a change of pace for me but I’m also going back to my roots because that’s what I started singing when I released my first album and my second album,” they told Fallon.

The singer also revealed that they sought treatment before writing their latest album. Demi previously attended rehab following a near-fatal overdose in 2018 but was living a “California sober” lifestyle as recently as March 2021, allowing themself to smoke marijuana and partake in the occasional drink. “A one-size-fits-all solution does not work for everybody,” they told GLAMOUR US at the time. “What I’m encouraging people to do is just make choices for themselves. Autonomy, for me, is what changed my life.”

Demi even released a song on their seventh studio album called “California Sober.” “Used to live in fear of always slipping, / But living for perfection isn’t living. / I ran a little slower, now I’m tripping. / A beautiful and magical beginning,” they sang on the track.

This is no longer the case. “After going through even more stuff last year, I came out of treatment again,” Demi told Fallon. “I realized, like, I really want to do this for myself and I want to make the best album possible, something that really represents who I am…The easiest way to do something the most authentic is to do it clean and sober.

They added, “So I made this album, you know, clean and sober. I can’t say that about my last album, but this one I’m really really proud about.”
