There’s no better feeling than landing on one of the coolest, most game-changing new skincare/makeup/hair trends and it *actually* working. That said, there’s nothing more frustrating than spending upwards of £100 on a snazzy new hair treatment or at-home facial system, only to find out it doesn’t do a whole lot.
Enter: GLAMOUR Tries, the weekly Instagram series which sees GLAMOUR editors do all of the time-consuming (and expensive) work for you.
Yep, we’ve been busy trying out all of the (sometimes) wacky but always wonderful beauty crazes to take the internet (most often, TikTok) by storm – from KVD Beauty’s Good Apple Skin-Perfecting foundation (when they said “one swipe”, they weren’t playing) to the CurrentBody’s LED device that boosts collagen and reducing wrinkles while you’re sat on the sofa. We’re testing the products that every veteran beauty sleuth is talking about on the internet – but that you want to do a bit of research into before buying. On GLAMOUR Tries this week, our Beauty and Features Assistant, Sheila Manoma, tried the butterfly faux locs trend that’s taking TikTok by storm. Here is a guide on how to do butterfly locs on yourself straight from TikTok – but remember to check out our Instagram stories for more.
STEP 1: Gather your tools!
You’ll need the hair (we used six packs of the Urban Water Wave in shade 99J, £3.99 per pack, Spell Beauty), rubber bands like these rubber bands from Amazon (we soaked ours in olive oil just so they don’t cause too much tension on the hair), some hair gel (Eco Style Moroccan Argan Oil Styling Gel, £5.99, Boots) and this Afro Pick Magic Coils comb.
STEP 2: Part Your Hair
“I’m going to part my hair into four, and I’m going to create four rows because I want my locks to be nice and thick… and I don’t have time to do all the small, small stuff,” Shei said.
“Each row on that divided quarter, will have three braids, except the row closest to my ear which will only have two as it’s a shorter row.
“I’m using rubber bands to make sure that each braid looks snatched and the root of it is tight tight. I’ll do the whole head in one go.”
STEP 3: Weave the hair
“The shorter part stays with my real hair and the other side is used to twist around it. I’m going to go back into the root so it’s nice and sealed, and then back down again.
“When I get it to the length that I want it, I’m going to create a little knot then go back up to seal the rest of the hair in. Also it adds a bit of volume. And then when I’m ready to let go, I can just take my finger out.”
The Verdict:
“It took me a total of four and a half hours which is actually pretty good for this sort of thing, considering it’s my first time!
“All in all, I’m obsessed with it. It’s not perfect but it’s pretty good for a first time.”
