Rugby shirts might seem like an unlikely item to become the go-to piece for navigating that awkward period between summer and autumn, but after seeing it over and over again on our favourite fashion girls, we’re now sold.
While it’s not a new trend per se (who could forget that Loewe rugby shirt seen on Rihanna and Hailey Bieber last year that had us running to the stores), the way it’s being styled this season feels quite fresh. Exhibit A: All the street style girls at Copenhagen Fashion Week styled their stripes with such aplomb, many wearing their shirts with jorts or capris, leaning into the sporty-chic way of dressing. We’re partial to how one show-goer wore her tonal blue rugby shirt with a lace skirt and matching socks with Mary Janes that gives a lady-like spin to an otherwise boyish look.

Meanwhile, Gigi Hadid was recently spotted wearing hers with khakis and a leather jacket, demonstrating how this versatile piece can easily be worn as the temperatures drop.

Speaking of Gigi, Drew Barrymore shared a video of herself on social media wearing a rugby shirt from Hadid’s knitwear label Guest in Residence with a pair of jeans, while chowing down on a burger. After watching it, we can’t tell what we crave more: her powder blue and baby pink top or a smashed burger (or both).
The appeal of the rugby shirt lies in its comfortable, oversized fit and sometimes eclectic colour combinations, allowing it to brighten up any simple outfit combo as stylishly shown by our favourite celebs. It’s also a slightly more “statement” iteration of the Breton shirt, with its pop colours and distinctive collar. Of course, for those who prefer a preppier take on the look sans stripes, take a page out of Taylor Swift‘s book as she wore her plain, oversized shirt as a dress paired with long autumn-friendly boots. It’s the, shall we say, more demure and mindful take on the rugby shirt trend.

As we head into the in-between few weeks straddling summer and autumn, a cashmere or knit version could also come in handy as a throw-over top over a skirt or skinny jeans. After all, it was famously a part of Princess Diana’s uniform (the Princess of Wales paired hers with white jeans and suede loafers) and who are we to argue with Lady Di?
