We don’t mean to brag, but this is probably the best movies of all time list ever compiled.
When it comes to talking about ‘the best films ever made’, you probably think of the usual critics’ picks (The Godfather; The Shawshank Redemption; Vertigo) or the ‘Oscar fodder’ of years gone by (No Country For Old Men; Saving Private Ryan; The Godfather, again). Not to mention Hitchcock classic, Rear Window (just for the Grace Kelly fabulousness alone) and the two-notes-and-we-have-a-villain Jaws.
And yes, call us predictable, but you will certainly find those films in this list – because they deserve to be. But we haven’t just left it there. Rest assured we’ve also picked out some of the movies we’ve most enjoyed in their entirety; those movies that wouldn’t typically make the cut.
Or the newcomers that are too new to make the “timeless masterpiece” lists, but would be a serious crime not to include on ours. For instance, we can’t think of a film that’s ever made us laugh as much as Bridesmaids and Sister Act, or made us weep in life-affirming joy as much as Love Actually. Film buffs, you may choose to look away now. But we think, for those reasons, they deserve to make the cut.
Of course, we’ve picked out all the pieces of pure cinematic excellence that came to mind, with award-winning films such as: Dallas Buyers Club starring Matthew McConaughey; Moonlight; Good Will Hunting; Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk; Steve McQueen’s Oscar-winning 12 Years A Slave. Yep, for all the side-splitting comedies, there’s a haunting sad film that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Then there are the old favourites like The Graduate, the film which inspired the phrase “Are you trying to seduce me, Mrs Robinson?” and a soulful soundtrack devised by Simon & Garfunkel.
We’re also talking about those cartoon classics that will make you shed a tear regardless of how many times you’ve watched it! You got it, The Lion King. How about those action movies that transported you into a world full of supernatural forces and adventure like the Avengers. We also couldn’t leave out at least one Harry Potter movie, of course…
We’re going across the film genres here. There’s also horrors/ thrillers, a couple of sci-fi flicks and even a few rom-coms – think the teen movie classic She’s All That, where, you guessed it, the popular jock falls in love with the “nerd” – setting a trope for a whole host of Noughties movies that came after it. On the rom-com front, we also have Nora Ephron’s classic When Harry Met Sally, starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, and of course Notting Hill – Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant at their finest.
