And while we’re of course engaging with LGBTQ+ content all year around, it’s nevertheless an important time to make sure we’re hearing enough voices from the community at all capacities. As we approach the Jubilee weekend, it’s probably a good time to branch out and delve a bit deeper into the Netflix vault.

If you haven’t watched Russell T. Davies’ It’s A Sin yet, then what are you waiting for? The Channel 4 drama starring Years & Years’ Olly Alexander alongside Lydia West follows a group of young adults who move to London in the early ‘80s during the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, when little was known about the virus. It gives a snapshot of the young, gay men whose lives were turned upside down during this period – and is at once fun (with a brilliant 80s soundtrack) and poignant as the action chronicles the plight of characters who fall victim to AIDS.
Another brilliant show is Heartstopper, which is based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series of the same name and tells the coming-of-age story of two teenager boys who realised their friendship is in fact something more.
Or if you love a probing documentary there’s Pray Away, which follows the ex-leaders and survivors of the gay conversion movement, and takes a deep dive into how it affected members of the LGBTQ+ community.

In the mood for a new drama? Season one of Netflix’s Pose has built up a huge fan base. The show, which follows the elaborate vogueing balls in 90s New York, serves up its fair share of drama as rival groups who reside in specific houses attempt to rule the balls and navigate the HIV and AIDs outbreak. This TV show has it all from glitter and sequins to tears and laughter. It’s a must-watch.
Now, if a bit of light hearted reality TV or game / competition series is more your cup of tea and you haven’t tapped into RuPaul’s Drag Race, this is your sign to do so, expeditiously. The hit show hosted by the iconic mother of all drag mothers RuPaul, who is looking for America’s Next Drag Superstar will take you on a rollercoaster ride. The Queens go through great lengths to be crowned top spot and to go home with a 100,000$ cash prize.
