TikTok: ‘Save vs Splurge’ Beauty Trend Might Be Its Most Useful Yet

TikTok has blessed with many an er, unusual makeup trend, from fork contouring to foundation frothing – but not this time.

Lately, beauty creators on the app have been sharing their ‘save vs splurge’ picks, in order to help people save money on their beauty shopping. It all started with @skincarewithshelbs, who posted a video on her favourite and not-so-favourite product picks – and since then, countless others have used the sound to share their own.

Even better, makeup artist @makeupbymonicaa has taken the trend a step further by talking through the makeup product categories that she believes are better to save or splurge on.

“Being a beginner can be so hard when there are over 95,000 brands out there,” she says. “I’m gonna tell you what you should save or splurge on.

“First up you do not need a bougie primer. Drugstore primers work perfectly,” she says, recommending the Elf Power Grip primer, which costs £10.

“I’ve always been a high-end foundation girl because your girl has sensitive skin – and I have an olive undertone making it super difficult to match in the drugstore,” she then added, applying the Fenty Beauty foundation.

She goes on: “Save on the concealers and go with the drugstore concealers. I love the L’Oréal Infallible one, it covers my dark circles so well and it’s super affordable.

“Splurge on those powders, especially the Huda Beauty one. This one is unbeatable for a reason!”

Other products that were go-to ‘splurge’ items on TikTok included Charlotte Tilbury’s cult Flawless Filter, the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blushes and the much-loved Huda Beauty Easy Bake Loose Powder, as recommended by Monica.

It’s safe to say TikTok can get pretty overwhelming when it comes to beauty products – there’s a ‘must-try’ viral product every week – and it’s important to remember that you don’t always have to buy luxury items in order to enjoy and express yourself through beauty.
