Wimbledon kicks off with a sustainably-driven dress code set to thrill eco-conscious tennis fan Kate Middleton

The Great British summer may still (still!) be pending, but that wasn’t going to delay the start of Wimbledon 2021. Having been cancelled last year during the early peak of the Coronavirus pandemic, tennis stars and supporters alike were more eager than ever for this year’s championships to kick off.

But while we’ve all undoubtedly got our eyes glued to the game (did anyone else think that young Brit Jack Draper was actually about to knock out reigning champion Novak Djokovic after that first set?), we’d be lying if we said we weren’t at least a little interested in the outfits making their way to those hot property courtside seats.

While, unlike Ascot, there is no traditional dress code for Wimbledon attendees, this year sees evian (the official water sponsor for Wimbledon 2021) requesting that guests invited into their annual VIP Suite dress sustainably.

“At evian, we are committed to sustainability – and our evian VIP suite at The Championships is no different,” explained Gemma Morgan, Brand Marketing Manager at evian. “This year, we are encouraging our celebrity guests in the suite to dress ‘smart and eco-consciously’ – from re-wearing and recycling their favourite outfit, wearing a look or accessory from their favourite sustainable designer, to wearing an item made from recycled materials.”

The news is set to thrill avid Wimbledon fan the Duchess of Cambridge, whose eco-conscious attitude to fashion sees her famously rewearing a number of her favourite pieces and championing conscious brands, such as Faithfull the Brand and Beulah London.

How, or whether, Kate adheres to the sustainable dress code we’ll likely have to wait until the second week of the championships to find out, but thanks to Anais Gallagher, Romeo Beckham and his girlfriend Mia Regan joining the likes of Anne-Marie, Raye and Georgia Toffolo – who made sure to recycle their favourite looks, wear pieces made from recycled materials or by sustainable designers – we’ve already had our first-day-fix of celebrity guest style.
