Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum struck up a surprising romance last year on the set of Kravitz’s directorial debut, Pussy Island, a movie title I like so much I will be including it as many times as possible. Now Catwoman herself is opening up about how his casting and their relationship came to be.
“I’m really grateful that this movie has brought him into my life that way,” Kravitz told WSJ Magazine of Pussy Island in a new profile, per People. “When you make things with people, it’s a very sacred space, and when you’re compatible with somebody creatively, it often opens up other channels, because you’re kind of sharing all of yourself.”
For thriller Pussy Island, Kravitz wanted to cast against type. Specifically, she wanted “someone who hadn’t played a dark character before because I think that’s exciting to watch someone who’s mostly played boy next door, good guy, love interest, all of that.”
“I felt, even from afar, before I knew him, that he was a feminist and that he wasn’t afraid of exploring that darkness, because he knows he’s not that,” she continued, again talking about a movie that is called Pussy Island. “That’s why I was drawn to him and wanted to meet with him. And I was right.”

For his part, Tatum spoke to the magazine about the role (in Pussy Island) but not the relationship. “It’s always really intriguing to have someone bring you something that literally no one else has ever thought of you for,” he said. Zoë Kravitz began the script five years ago and wrote the part with Tatum in mind; his company is now helping to produce the project. What a match!
“I didn’t know Zoë before I met her for the film,” added Tatum, and again, the film he is talking about is the upcoming feature Pussy Island.
