EXCLUSIVE: Filmmaker Alejandro Monteverde, best known as the director of 2023’s runaway box office title Sound Of Freedom, has completed work Cabrini, his next feature for which we can share the first official trailer above.
Currently set to hit cinemas worldwide on March 8 following a debut at the upcoming European Film Market on February 19 and 20, Cabrini follows the true story of an immigrant woman who travels to New York City in the late 1800s, where she overcomes poor health and rampant misogyny to build a “worldwide empire of hope.” Full synopsis reads: Cabrini tells the amazing story of Mother Francesca Cabrini, and her fight for the equality, health, and happiness of immigrant orphans. After moving to Five Points in New York City, Cabrini goes toe-to-toe with the government, the church, and blatant bigotry to fight for those at the margins of society. She overcomes, poor health and rampant misogyny inside and outside the Church to build an empire of hope, including a worldwide hospital system.
Starring are John Lithgow and David Morse (Disturbia) alongside Italian actress Cristiana Dell’Anna (Gomorrah), who plays Mother Francesca Cabrini, one of the most influential people at the turn of the 20th century and the first American Female to be sainted by the Catholic Church as well as the Patron Saint of the Immigrant.
Cabrini was born near Milan, Italy, in 1850. Despite being told at a young age she would never live to reach adulthood, she defied the odds and co-founded the Institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1880. In 1889, Cabrini and her sister companions immigrated to New York to help Italian immigrants face a new world. Amidst chaos and poverty, Cabrini and her companions established schools, orphanages, and hospitals and organized religious classes throughout the United States. In 1917, she passed away in Chicago, was canonized as a saint by Pope Pius XII in 1946, and became the Patroness of Immigrants in 1950. Today, the institute that Cabrini founded continues to fulfill diverse roles as educators, nurses, social workers, administrators, and board members worldwide.
The film will be distributed by Angel Studios. It was produced by Leo Severino and Jonathan Sanger, with J. Eustace Wolfington and Francesca Cabrini exec producing. Today’s trailer also features a rendition of Mariah Carey’s Hero.
