‘Stephan Curry: Underrated’ Trailer: How A Scrawny, 160-Pound Kid Became A 4X NBA Champion And The Greatest Shooter Of All Time

The first trailer for the Apple+ doc Stephan Curry: Underrated has dropped this morning and it gives a taste of what the film has to offer.

Focusing on the early development of the man considered the greatest shooter of all time, Stephen Curry: Underrated documents Curry’s rise from an being a 160-pound college player at a small town Division I college to a four-time NBA champion, NBA Finals MVP and key component of one of the most dominant sports dynasties in the world.

The feature documentary — blending intimate cinéma vérité, archival footage and on camera interviews with Curry, his family and intimates — looks at how he literally changed the game of basketball with his remarkable 3-point shooting.

“How did I get here,” Curry is heard to say in the trailer. “I was the undersized scrawny kid that was just trying to figure out how to make it. I was overwhelmed by everything. How would I respond?”

His answer, “Let the work begin.”

The doc will cover how Curry went from the 7th pick in the 2009 NBA draft — chosen behind such forgettable names as Hasheem Thabeet and Johnny Flynn — to a literal game changer via his natural ability, tireless work ethic and unorthodox training regimen.

As his mother says in the trailer, “It’s not about proving other people wrong. It’s about proving himself right.”

Stephen Curry: Underrated is directed by Peter Nicks. The film is produced by Peter Nicks and Ryan Coogler through Proximity Media, Erick Peyton through Curry’s Unanimous Media and Sean Havey, Ben Cotner and Marissa Torres Ericson. Sev Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler and Emily Osborne are executive producing.

The film will be released in select theaters and premiere globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, July 21.

The project premiered in Sundance, where Deadline sat down with the filmmakers.
