SVU Season 26 Finale Synopsis Hints At A Big Promotion For Benson’s New Team

SVU Season 26 Finale Synopsis Hints At A Big Promotion For Benson’s New Team

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 26 finale synopsis has teased that there will be a promotion for one of Benson’s team. The long-running Law & Order spinoff series has become one of the most success shows on NBC, and continues to attract strong viewership. With Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 26 heading toward its denoument, there are a few loose ends that need to be tied up, as well as plot points that will look to set up future seasons of the show.

Per TV Line, a brief synopsis for the episode, titled ‘Post-Rage’, reveals that Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson will investigate a string of sexual assaults targeting female psychiatrists, whilst the squad celebrates a promotion. There are no further details about the episode, which is set to air mid-May, but the wording indicates this will be a promotion welcomed by the team. The finale will follow Thursday’s upcoming penultimate episode ‘Aperture,’ so more may be known following that episode.

What This Means For Law & Order: SVU Moving Forward

The Promotion Could Have A Significant Impact On The Team Dynamic

Whilst the synopsis for the episode does not reveal details of who is set to be promoted, there are a couple of considerations. One of the likely candidates for a promotion would be Curry getting promoted to Chief, and staying in a recurring role. This is a position that has been open since Chief McGrath departed during season 26, after interfering with his daughter’s sexual assault case. Being that Curry is already IAB Captain, and essentially serves as the defacto McGrath replacement, promoting her to the position of Chief feels like it would make logical sense for her arc.

Catch the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 26 finale on Thursday, May 15 at 9/8c on NBC.

Alternatively, it has been confirmed that series regulars Octavio Pisano and Juliana Martinez, who portray Law & Order: SVU characters Detectives Joe Velasco and Kate Silva respectively, will be leaving the show after season 26. So, it could be that another character is set to replace one of them, and this could be the promotion that is referred to. More will become clear as the finale episode edges closer, but the promotion is bound to be one that sets the tone for the show moving forward, and could inform the early storylines for next season, assuming it gets renewed.

If The Show Gets A Renewal Expect More Of The Same, With Subtle Changes

After a quarter of a century on the air, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit feels ready for a shakeup, That said, by the same token, the show already has a successful formula that doesn’t really need to be changed. If Law & Order: SVU season 27 gets a renewal, it would likely be business as usual, with a few subtle changes, and the big promotion could be a key one. This is a move that could strengthen the team internally, as well as feed into story arcs for future episodes of Law & Order: SVU, and might even result in a casting promotion too.
