‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Sequel Scripted By Aline Brosh McKenna In Early Development At Disney

After scripting the beloved fashion-world dramedy The Devil Wears Prada, starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt, which grossed over $326 million worldwide in its June 2006 debut, Aline Brosh McKenna has been tapped to script a sequel in early development at Disney, sources have confirmed to Deadline.

Reps for the studio declined comment. Who from the original cast will return is not yet clear. (It should be noted that in an interview with E! News just a few months back, Hathaway expressed skepticism that “a continuation of that story” was “ever gonna happen.”) The original film’s director, David Frankel, is in talks to return, we’re told — and original producer Wendy Finerman will be back, as well.

Released by 20th Century Fox ahead of Disney’s acquisition of the studio, The Devil Wears Prada is based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name. The story follows Andy Sachs (Hathaway), a recent journalism graduate who moves to New York City and lands a job as a junior assistant to Miranda Priestly (Streep), the powerful and demanding editor-in-chief of a high-fashion magazine. Andy initially struggles with the high-pressure environment and Miranda’s relentless demands but gradually adapts, gaining confidence and style. As she becomes more involved in her work, she faces personal challenges, including a strained relationship with her boyfriend, Nate (Adrian Grenier), and ethical dilemmas about the fashion industry’s values.

Bringing Streep a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination, the film was a breakthrough project for Blunt, whose other co-stars included Stanley Tucci, Simon Baker, and Adrian Grenier.

Back in 2022, Hathaway said on The View that she didn’t think a Devil Wears Prada was possible. “I don’t know if there can be [a sequel],” she said on the ABC talker. “I just think that movie was in a different era. Now everything’s gone so digital and that movie is centered around the concept of producing a physical thing and it’s just, it’s just very different.”

But there was a Devil Wears Prada reunion of sorts at this year’s SAG Awards, when Streep, Hathaway and Blunt took the stage to present that night’s first award, which went to The Bear star Jeremy Allen White. Watch the fun here:

McKenna perhaps is best known for co-creating, showrunning and exec producing the Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated musical comedy series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, starring Rachel Bloom, which ran for four seasons on The CW.l She is coming off of her directorial debut with Your Place or Mine, the Netflix rom-com starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher, which she also wrote and produced. Upon its debut on the streamer in February, the film spent four weeks in the Global Top 10 Films (English), reaching the Top 10 Films in 92 countries. Boasting Story By credit on Disney’s Cruella, the veteran writer-producer has also previously scripted films like Annie, We Bought a Zoo, and 27 Dresses, among others.

News of the Devil Wears Prada sequel’s development was first reported on Monday by Puck.
