Zelda: The Wind Waker Sequel Unites Gamers: “Absolutely Amazing”

The Legend of Zelda series has been through a ton of different guises over the years, and the developer has a pretty remarkable record of hitting the right notes, regardless of which formula they choose to use.

Most recently, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom showed just how much potential there was for the franchise in an open-world setting. Add to that the stunning visuals the developer managed to put together, and it was clear that they were on to a winner, possibly laying out what future games were set to look like for a while yet.

That said, the older games in the series are still some of the favorites for the fan base at large, and there’s plenty of reason that making a return to those, in combination with the above, could be a really exciting new era once again.

For many, Wind Waker still represents one of the high points in the Zelda series to date. Though it already got a direct sequel in Phantom Hourglass on the DS, it really feels like there’s a ton of untapped potential to continue its story in a new way, perhaps with the setup that BotW and TotK used.

Over on YouTube, the channel 16-bit Dreams has given us a window into that potential future, with a fan-made concept trailer that shows us what a direct Wind Waker sequel would look like in BotW style. Safe to say, it looks incredible, and all of the comments are filled with fans desperately wishing it were real.

The Wind Waker was essentially an open-world game. The vast sea was Hyrule’s terrain, and the Deku Leaf was the paraglider. It was a bold idea to have Hyrule submerged underwater to avoid technical limitations at that time (i.e., loading issues), but this brought a different ‘wind’ to the series. I hope that with modern technology, we might get a new sequel in the Wind Waker style,” one comment read.

“This. This imaginary Wind Waker sequel would make me go into debt and buy a Switch 2 to play it. Beautifully done,” another added.

A third simply added, “This is absolutely amazing.”

Though there have been no intimations from Nintendo that anything like this is coming down the pipeline, it would be the ideal time to capitalize on the hype around the franchise. It’s about to launch into its 40th anniversary celebrations, and a Wind Waker follow-up with Breath of the Wild tech would catapult Zelda forward once again.
