Aaron Carter, the American pop singer and actor behind songs like “I Want Candy” and “That’s How I Beat Shaq,” has died, The Hollywood Reporter and TMZ report and Pitchfork has confirmed. Carter was found dead on Saturday (November 5) in his home in Lancaster, California. Police arrived at the scene after a 911 call was made claiming that the musician had drowned in the bathtub, according to the reports. Carter was 34 years old.

Aaron Carter began performing music when he was just 7 years old, releasing his eponymous debut album in 1997. His breakout LP, Aaron’s Party (Come and Get It), arrived in 2000, and featured the hit singles “I Want Candy,” “Bounce,” and “That’s How I Beat Shaq.” He released three more studio albums in his lifetime: 2001’s Oh Aaron, 2002’s Another Earthquake, and 2018’s Løvë.

Aaron Carter was the younger brother of Nick Carter, a member of popular late-1990s boy band Backstreet Boys. Early in his career, Aaron toured regularly with the group. He also occasionally made guest appearances on Nickelodeon. Carter later appeared on ABC’s competition series Dancing With the Stars, as well as the Broadway Dr. Seuss musical Seussical.

Throughout his adult life, Aaron Carter was open about his difficulties with mental illness and substance misuse. During a 2019 appearance on The Doctors, Carter claimed he had been diagnosed with multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, and acute anxiety. He also said that he was manic depressive and discussed the many medications he’s been prescribed, including antidepressants and Xanax. In 2017, Carter spent time in a rehab facility, and he entered into an outpatient program earlier this year.
