Flying Lotus provided the original score for the Netflix original anime series Yasuke, which is out April 29. Today, he’s shared two singles from the show’s soundtrack: “Black Gold,” with Thundercat, and “Between Memories,” featuring Niki Randa. Listen to both below.
In addition to providing the music, Flying Lotus joined the show’s creator, director, and producer LeSean Thomas to help with the project as a consultant and executive producer. “[LeSean] and I talked about being outsiders in anime,” FlyLo said in a statement. “I was like, ‘Why aren’t more Black kids trying to do this? Why is it so out of the ordinary?’ He was saying that it”s because they don’t have examples.”
Thundercat recently won the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album for his album Is It What It Is. Flying Lotus was nominated for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical for his work on that album.
