American Idol fans have been complaining that the judges are too soft on the hit singing competition. The current judges are Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Carrie Underwood. This is Carrie’s first year as a judge and she stepped in to replace Katy Perry.
When the show first began, it was a worldwide sensation. Simon Cowell was so brutally honest with contestants that it almost bordered on the edge of cruel. However, his harsh words made the show what it was back then. He left after nine seasons in 2010 and the show just hasn’t been the same since.
Fans agree that there needs to be more honest feedback. Cowell was never afraid to tell a contestant they couldn’t sing or that they were garbage. Today’s current judges would never do that. In fact, some fans say they should be called “complimenters” because all they do is dish out compliments instead of criticizing their performance.
Another fan said, “The judges on American Idol need to stop being so nice…not everyone is ‘fantastic.’” Someone else said, “American Idol NEEDS a new Simon. These judges are too nice.”
An Inside Source Speaks Out
The Sun spoke with an inside source for American Idol, who shared their need for a harsher judge to be on the show. The insider said that executives are desperate to find the next Simon Cowell. They said, “The judges are struggling to find their next Simon. They know finding the perfect mixture of harsh critique and humorous entertainment, which Simon embodies.”
It was mentioned that several A-listers have turned down the opportunity to be a judge. The reason? The insider said nobody wants to be cancelled or offend people. Overall, nobody wants to be the bad guy. Cowell just didn’t care what everyone thought and that is what made the show so successful.
The insider went on to say, “Plus, insulting people’s dreams just doesn’t hit the same as it did in the aughts so a high-profile star isn’t going to sign up to be that person. They’re just not.”
It was explained that this is why the show has gone the family-friendly route and is focusing more on backstories with the contestants. While they are humanizing the contestants, the insider noted that this can only go on for so long.
The show needs a facelift and they need someone like Simon Cowell to step in and make it what it once was.
