Fans of the Mountain Men series recently saw the show finish its 13th season. Through this season, viewers were introduced to Lauro Eklund, learning of his goal to finish the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. With the end of the season, viewers got to see Eklund’s story reach its current conclusion.
One Of Lauro Eklund’s Dogs Was Injured During The Race
Mountain Men is a series that premiered on History Channel back in 2012. The series explores the lives of those living in the wilderness amongst the mountains of North America.
Lauro Eklund joined the series during its 13th season. As fans watch, Eklund was a rookie musher who sought to complete the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
As noted by History, the season finale was fittingly dubbed “The Finish Line.” Its description noted that, “Lauro nears the end of the Iditarod, crossing 260 miles of ice along the Bering Sea coast to reach the finish line in Nome.”
As noted by Monsters & Critics, Eklund is from Two Rivers, Alaska. Viewers saw him travel from Anchorage to Nome and faced various challenges from the regions.
Eklund’s Father Was Also An Iditarod Finisher
Notably, one of Eklund’s eleven dogs was seen getting injured during the race. However, Eklund managed to keep a good pace.
Towards the end, Eklund averaged eight miles per hour. Thanks to this, he had hoped to be able to complete the race within 12 days.
The end of the race would especially prove to be a challenge. Notably, the last 260 miles were against the Bering Sea coast, an area infamous for its weather and dangerous conditions.
By the 11th day, however, Eklund seemed within his goal. At this point, he reached the safety checkpoint, which served as a final stop before the Nome finish line.
Prior to the final 20-mile stretch, Eklund took a brief rest and resupply. He then reached Nome, meeting with his father, a former Iditarod finisher himself.
Eklund ended up finishing the race in 11 days, 21 hours, and 22 minutes. This earned him the 26th place within 29 finishers.
Looking back at his accomplishment, Eklund was grateful for the support he was given, especially from the local mushing community. He also highlighted the mental and physical challenges he faced, noting the importance of determination and the bond between him and his dogs.
On social media, Eklund has also recently shared his holiday season with fans. On a recent Instagram post, he noted, “We just out here spreading the joy & Christmas cheer with some mush caroling! To our friends and neighbors (who are more like family!)” As seen in the video, Eklund’s dogs were out and about to help with the caroling.
