FX’s Fargo marked its 10th anniversary in April, and creator-showrunner Noah Hawley is still finding new ways to expand its universe including the critically acclaimed fifth season — which is very much in the Emmy conversation right now — just as he continues to prepare to launch the first season of his FX version of Alien.
Writing most if not all episodes, directing a few and continuing his wildly successful efforts in adapting classic movies like the above two into completely different but also reverential television series, Hawley is finding much inspiration these days, as he tells me in this week’s edition of my Deadline video series Behind the Lens.

Winner of Emmy, WGA, Critics Choice and Peabody awards for his work on Fargo, Hawley also is an accomplished author, with six books to his credit that also include the feature Lucy in the Sky, previous writing and producing for series like Bones and Legion and so much more.
Fargo, a magnet for top stars and revolving casts including this season’s with Jon Hamm, Juno Temple and Jennifer Jason Leigh, has been nominated for 55 Emmys and won six, including Outstanding Miniseries for Season 1 in 2014. Among the questions covered in our wide-ranging conversation: How long can this go on? What are his plans for his new Alien series? What drives him creatively, and what are his interactions with Fargo movie writer-directors Joel and Ethan Coen and Alien director Ridley Scott?
