‘BoJack Horseman’ Oral History Part 1: Creating and Casting Bojack Plus Season 1’s Surprise Turn

Netflix’s groundbreaking adult animated series is coming to an end, with the second half of ‘BoJack Horseman’ season 6 – the final season – now available on the streaming service. For the past six years, the show has been lauded by critics for its dizzyingly surreal laughs – most of which come via some ingenious animal puns – as well as its fearless tackling of life’s lows: depression, addiction, and death are all regular beats in the tale of the ageing onetime sitcom star, BoJack Horseman. Ahead of the release of the final episodes, Rotten Tomatoes sat down with creator and showrunner Raphael Bob-Waksberg to talk about the origins of the series, how he got it sold, and how he came up with the idea of casting funnyman Will Arnett in the title role. Plus, Bob-Waksberg reflects on reactions to the show’s first season, which ranged from mind-blown to mind-melted among those who didn’t quite know what to think of this show about talking animals that was like nothing they’d seen on TV before.
