This viral makeup hack for getting the perfect foundation is captivating TikTok (but it’s a lot of effort)

If only there were a way to easily master getting your perfect foundation shade, all year round… Well, it turns out there is a hack for this – rejoice! But be warned, it’s pretty time-consuming and you’ll need to be dedicated to the full beat (LOL if you think we’re exaggerating).

Technicalities aside, these viral hack videos are fun to watch, and this one in particular is cool and captivating in equal measure.

It involves drawing lines to act as boarders and then filling in the little squares with varying tones (because no one’s skin is one tone all over) across the entire face, almost like you’re mapping out a multi-coloured chess board.

Deeper colours can go where you’d contour, and lighter colours where you’d look to brighten.

The result when blended out is a true-to-skin tone canvas that already has all the other steps like concealing done (which you’d hope for, considering all the time taken even before blending).

Some who’ve tried the technique have said it was “hard to blend”, but one person who attempted the hack used setting spray to make this part easier. Although, she said it all felt like a lot of makeup and ended the video by saying she was “impressed, but I will not be doing that again”. Fair.

Someone commented on the hack: “Soooo cool, I would like to try, but I’m not good on makeup”.

Another jokingly added: “It already takes me so long to do my makeup, this is next level!”

Over on TikTok, some have called this foundation trick ‘the square contour challenge’, with the emphasis being on – you guessed it – the contouring aspect that can be achieved.

If you’re bored and have some time on your hands, I guess why not give it a try? Personally, I’ll be watching and admiring while sticking to my light-medium coverage products – even if the tone is a minor touch too warm.
