Vanilla cream is the bright and beautiful hair colour refresh that we’re fan-girling

You know what they say, the grass is always greener, on the other side. This summer, when it comes to hair though, it’s blonder. We’re out the other side of lockdown and after months of growing extra familiar with our roots loads of us are looking for a hair shake-up. And nothing says freshhh like bleached blondes.

“There’s going to be a bigger move towards blondes again,” says pro hair stylist, Luke Hersheson. “After being stuck inside for so long, I think people want brightening up,” he adds. “They want to feel lighter and lifted – and a bright colour can have a really uplifting, mood-boosting effect.”

One colour we’re crushing on hard, is the vanilla cream shade served up by model Gabriella Borges. The colour, created by Brazil’s leading blonde expert, Romeu Felipe, is crisp (thanks to that icy undertone), then warmed up, ready for summer with a hint of creamy vanilla tint and shots of bright blonde illuminage framing the face. All blend into a slightly bronzed and subtly sandy root colour to pull everything together.

Basically, it’s exactly the kind of colour transformation that can help us feel refreshed and pulled together. It’s a clean-slate hair colour that can coax us out of our sweatpants and back into the real world.

That said, it’s probably worth mentioning that as far as chill shades go, this one is a little high maintenance. Romeu revealed that the look took a cool 12 hours in the salon to create. As for the exact shade blend – which Romeu revealed was created using Wella – it’s pretty technical, so take notes if you’re heading to your colourist. “Root 12/89 + 9%. Very thin lights all over the head, blurred with 8 / + 7/81 and that was it.”

The good news is, once instated, the colour is slightly less time-consuming to maintain. “Just a monthly touch-up and blend to add depth,” says Romeu. Best get those hair appointments nailed down!
