I’m living in black leggings right now, so here are the best leggings to wear everywhere you go

Black leggings have long been the Marmite of the fashion world. When it comes to wearing them as part of an actual outfit (nope, we’re not talking about yoga get-ups here), you either love them or you don’t. That was, until, Coronavirus reared its ugly head. Suddenly, every woman – myself, Camille Charriere and Leandra Cohen included – added a pair of the best leggings to their WFH wardrobe. After all, alongside a tracksuit and a trusty loungewear jumpsuit, these bad boys are unrivalled in terms of comfort.

This season, as we cling onto comfortable yet outdoor-appropriate silhouettes, luxury fashion brands from Totême to Norma Kamali have all dropped pairs of leggings that ooze both elegance and versatility – and the high street is following suit. Not reserved exclusively for wearing around the house/on your next supermarket sweep, black leggings are also suitable for days in the office/brunch with friends. Take a look at this smart pair of black ponte seam front leggings if you don’t believe me.

Sure, the tight-fitting nature of leggings and their tendency to appear thin (if you don’t invest in a good pair) can leave you feeling something like a secondary school dance student circa 2007. Not the look we favour. So, I’ve been on a very important quest to find the best black leggings that are both comfy and stylish. The result? An edit of the best leggings so good it’ll have even the most die-hard legging critics converted. Yes, even you.

Before we get our teeth into the shopping part, it’s worth reminding yourself how to style leggings. Because doing so is a bit of an art. You’ve got to play with proportions, nailing the contrast between tight-fitting and oversized, and considering leggings to be your base layer. On the top, opt for chunky knitwear or an expensive-looking oversized blazer. Then layer to your heart’s content, both with clothing and accessories. Designer handbags, layered chain necklaces and chunky collars will ensure your look is finished to perfection.

For a pair of leggings with the strongest of style credentials, play with textures and shapes. Stirrup leggings that show off the slimmest part of your leg – your ankles – like this (Arket pair) are gaining momentum. Then there’s this high-waist shaping pair from Marks & Spencer, which gives designer options a run for their money.

Black faux leather leggings are another style-set favourite as the high-shine finish instantly elevates other wardrobe staples; this Commando pair can easily transition from day to night. The best black leggings with cashmere can be found at Calzedonia, and if it’s black maternity leggings you’re after, make a beeline for H&M’s Conscious Collection MAMA pair. Team with an oversized cardigan and some crisp white trainers and you’ll be good to go.

For the best leggings on a budget, we love M&S’s high waisted style, which also come in a range of lengths, while the best leggings for everyday are SKIMS’ thermal ribbed cotton-blend pair. Oh, and if you’re on the hunt for the best black leggings to work out in, look towards Nike and the ever-sustainable BAM Bamboo Clothing.

It’s time to cease thinking of leggings as reserved for sofa days but as an alternative to jeans or tailored trousers instead.
