Nicola Coughlan brilliantly poked fun at the stereotype that ‘women aren’t funny’

Nicola Coughlan – star of Bridgerton, Derry Girls and one of our fave-ever celebs – looked incredible on the 2022 BAFTA TV Awards red carpet on Sunday 8th May at London’s Royal Festival Hall. She wore a stunning hot pink gown by Valentino with a ruffled hem and statement bow-tie shoulder.

But it was the actor’s speech while presenting the award for ‘Male Performance in a Comedy Programme’ that really stole the show for us.

“So, we are here tonight to answer the very important question: Are men funny?”, Nicola quipped.

“Unfortunately, science has no way of figuring this out, so the only way I can think of that is fair to determine who wins this award, is to have some sort of illegal fight club, in which each nominee duals to the death…”

The actor then paused before continuing: “No, I’ve just been told the fight club is a no-go, it’s not happening. So we’ll do this the traditional way” – before announcing the nominees.

We are so here for Nicola’s brilliant play on the sexist stereotype that ‘women aren’t funny’.

Jamie Demetriou took home the award for Best Male Peformance In a Comedy Programme for Stath Lets Flats (Channel 4). He was up against Joe Gilgun (Brassic), Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education), Samson Kayo (Bloods), Steve Coogan (This Time with Alan Partridge), and Tim Renkow (Jerk).
