British stars rake in Golden Globe nods before controversial awards’ TV return

Some of Britain’s finest actors have earned nominations for the 80th Golden Globes, ahead of the ceremony’s return to television next year.

Dame Emma Thompson, Olivia Colman, Bill Nighy and Daniel Craig all received nods for top awards, with winners due to be revealed at a star-studded event in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, in January.

Normally one of the highest profile showbiz events of the calendar, this year’s Golden Globes ceremony was held in private after controversy over the diversity of the organising body’s membership and allegations that votes had been influenced by “freebies”.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has since been attempting to rebuild the awards’ reputation, and has added more than 100 new voters to its voting body, which it says “is now 52% female, 51.5% racially and ethnically diverse”.

Leading this year’s film nominations is The Banshees of Inisherin – which reunites In Bruges stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson – with eight.

Sci-fi comedy Everything Everywhere All at Once has six nominations, while Hollywood period movie Babylon and Steven Spielberg’s life story The Fablemans both have five.

In the TV categories, mocumentary sitcom Abbott Elementary leads the field with five nods, royal Netflix drama The Crown has four as does Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Only Murders in the Building, Pam & Tommy and The White Lotus: Sicily.

Movies Elvis, Tar and Pinocchio got three nods each.

Blockbuster Avatar: The Way Of Water, which is out in the UK this week, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick and Daniel Craig’s Glass Onion also got nominations.

After an investigation by the Los Angeles Times found the HFPA had no black members voting for the awards in 2021, Cruise reportedly handed back the three awards he had won over the years in protest.

Colman was among the nominees for best performance by an actress in a motion picture: drama for her turn in Empire Of Light.
