Film Independent Spirit Awards honors the best of independent storytelling and this year’s ceremony was hosted by comedian Hasah Minhaj. The 38th annual gala was marked by a first and going gender-neutral in their acting categories. It was also the first year that organizers introduced the Best Breakthrough Performance category.

Stars that attended the ceremony included Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, Cate Blanchett, Paul Mescal, Aubrey Plaza, Jenny Slate, Molly Shannon, Quinta Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Ke Huy Quan, Regina Hall, Gabrielle Union, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, and many more. Everything Everywhere All At Once, was the big winner of the afternoon taking seven trophies including Best Feature, Best Director and Best Screenplay for Daniel Kawn and Daniel Schenert. Yeoh took the trophy for Best Lead Performance and Key Huy Quan for Best Supporting Performance while Stephanie Hsu was the recipient of Best Breakthrough performance.
This year, the Spirit Awards also honored television content with Quinta Brunson winning Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series for her role on Abbott Elementary. The Rehearsal won in the Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series and The Bear took the Best New Scripted Series trophy. Ayo Edebiri won in the Best Supporting Performance in a New Series for The Bear.
