Baker Grace: Musical Interview

Baker Grace is a free spirit which is often reflected in her music and lyrics. One of the most confident and talented rising stars in today’s music industry she is planning the release of a brand new EP shortly. The EP will be themed Re: undoing toxic patterns. It is an exciting project for Baker. We traded questions and answers about her thoughts, career, and her music….

You intend to release new music every month leading up to an EP? Can you talk either about the EP or about your newest release?

This next EP is about undoing toxic patterns and becoming the love of my life. I spent a lot of time trying to fulfill the expectations of others when I should have been figuring out what makes me happy and how to take care of myself. Writing this EP helped me learn how to do that.

Are the themes in your songs subjects you often think about or are they written on impulse?

My music is mostly written on impulse, this specific EP is super personal because I wrote it while going through a breakup. I like my songs to tell stories and take people on a journey. Mostly, I write whatever I’m feeling passionate about in the moment.

Does the music or the lyrics come first?

Most of the time, the melody and lyrics come at the same time. Sometimes I will take inspiration from a poem I write and turn it into a song. I like to hear chords or a track and freestyle until something feels special.

Do you have a song that you absolutely love to perform and if so why?

I always love to perform “Be Okay.” It’s super personal and vulnerable and it is freeing to share that with others and have them connect to it. I love intimate moments in shows.

When you’re not doing music what do you like to do, interests, hobbies, etc?

I love yoga, reading, going to the beach, and spending time with friends and family. I am not much of a planner, I like to go with the flow and see what adventure comes out of it. I get a lot of inspiration that way.

If you could perform with anyone on stage who would you choose and why?

I would love to perform with Billie Eilish or Rihanna, I think they are both incredible artists.

Do you get nervous before a performance and if so what is your process for dealing with that?

I don’t really get nervous anymore because I focus on the delivery of the songs and the connection with the audience. It’s not really about me up there. I trust that it will go however it was meant to. Once I get on stage, I feel so in my element, like it’s truly where I’m meant to be.

If you could change anything about the music industry what would you like to see happen?

Right now, I wish there was more emphasis on the quality of the music. Social media has taken over in a lot of ways and the amount of likes a tik tok gets is more important than the actual music. That kind of sucks, but at the same time, social media has allowed for a lot more voices to be heard. There is just a lot of noise and I am hoping that people start making albums and focusing on artist careers rather than chasing viral moments.
