Is 3 Body Problem season 2 happening? Here’s what we know so far

3 Body Problem only premiered on 21 March, but the new Netflix sci-fi series already has us questioning everything from the laws of nature to humanity itself. In the new series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood writer Alexander Woo, viewers are taken on a journey that spans across the world and through several different timelines over eight episodes. From the Cultural Revolution in China to present day London to a suitably creepy VR game, the series fundamentally centres on how “a young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day”, as per Netflix’s synopsis.

Based on Cixin Liu’s critically acclaimed Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, the first season focuses on the book of the same name while integrating several key plot elements and characters from The Dark Forest and Death’s End. The show follows five former colleagues known as the Oxford Five — Auggie Salazar (Eiza González), Jin Cheng (Jess Hong), Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo), Jack Rooney (John Bradley) and Will Downing (Alex Sharp) — as they collaborate to take on one of the biggest threats to humanity and the earth as we know it.

So if, like us, you spent the weekend binging the entire series and are wondering whether we’ll be getting a 3 Body Problem season 2, here’s everything we know so far.

Will there be a 3 Body Problem season 2 on Netflix?

We have a lot of questions following that final cliffhanger, so is 3 Body Problem season 2 on the cards? It would certainly make sense given the loose ends that need to be tied up, and adding fuel to the fire is the fact that showrunner David Benioff previously told The Hollywood Reporter:

“At our first Comic Con [for Game of Thrones] someone asked if we’re going to get a second season. I remember saying there’s a scene that would happen in season three — I didn’t even want to name it, but ‘RW, for people who know — if we can get there, I think we’re going to be okay. And there’s a scene in the second season [of 3 Body Problem] that I feel is — it’s not the Judgment Day scene [in season one] — it’s one that happens in the second season … things wildly escape and there’s one scene, if we get to it, we’re golden — like when we got to the Red Wedding on Thrones.”
