CBS’s Misleading Cancellation Officially Marks The End Of An Era For Sitcoms

CBS’s Misleading Cancellation Officially Marks The End Of An Era For Sitcoms

One of the most consequential cancellations for CBS, and certainly the one with the biggest twist, ends an era for TV. Now that the 2025-2026 TV cycle is finished, broadcasters are looking forward to what comes next for their legacy shows, as well as establishing their upcoming debuts. However, not every show is coming back, which is part of networks’ effort in making sure that their portfolios are as fresh as possible. Some cancellations, however, sting worse than others.

CBS pulled the plug on several series in the past couple of years. The network is not new to the backlash that comes with cancelling shows, dealing with fans of NCIS: Hawai’i and Blue Bloods, who were understandably peeved about their favorite projects ending. That said, CBS’s cancellation of The Neighborhood was particularly frustrating for one reason. When it was renewed for its eighth and final season, the idea was that it would somehow continue with Malcolm and Marty’s spinoff, which was was even set up by the season 7 finale. Just a couple of months later, however, the project was deemed dead.

Marty and Malcolm’s spinoff no longer moving forward means that The Neighborhood franchise on CBS is now finished, which also marks the end of an era for network sitcoms. The Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield-led series was the last remaining comedy from the 2010s, premiering in 2018. Other shows from the same genre that debuted around the same time, such as Young Sheldon and The Conners, have both wrapped up their runs in 2024 and 2025, respectively. Now that The Neighborhood has also bowed out, all remaining comedies on traditional broadcast all started in the 2020s.

The Neighborhood debuted with a fairly simple premise. Its events kickstarted when the Johnsons from the Midwest moved to the house beside the Butlers in Pasadena, leading to an eight-season run full of character developments and community-building. It resulted in one of the most underrated hits for CBS, as The Neighborhood barely made major buzz like The Big Bang Theory franchise or even Ghosts. Despite that, it was a steady presence in its portfolio for nearly a decade.

Although there is no scarcity of comedies right now on network TV, The Neighborhood was specifically different and special for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it went beyond the traditional family-oriented series, as it married the Butlers and Johnsons into a bigger clan. Both had their respective storylines, but the crux of every episode was how they relied on each other in times of need, which is a unique take on the found family trope. Secondly, it was the only comedy that tackled racial issues in a realistic setting.

CBS Fall 2026 Schedule

CBS’s Complete Fall 2026 Schedule

Ahead of its finales, CBS has officially unveiled their confirmed fall 2026 schedule, which is a mix of established franchises and new offerings.

For what it’s worth, The Neighborhood‘s other spinoff, Crutch, has had its debut season, although not on CBS. Instead, the Tracy Morgan-led series was rolled out on Paramount+. No word yet whether it will return for a sophomore year, but if it does, perhaps it can bring back some characters from the flagship. Otherwise, an update on how Marty and Malcolm are doing would suffice.
