Ghostbusters has grown into a sprawling multimedia franchise since something strange first released in your neighborhoods back in 1984. What many would argue is an even more beloved entry, Ghostbusters 2 followed in 1989, while the franchise eventually returned to theaters with the divisive 2016 reboot before shifting back toward the original continuity with Ghostbusters: Afterlife and 2024’s Frozen Empire.
The next major screen project will once again take the series into animation with Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation’s Ghostbusters: Night Shift, a 2027 series set in New York City in 1994. It will serve as a sequel to Ghostbusters 2 in the original timeline, set just five years later, and fans are very interested to see what direction this project takes the franchise.
Beyond the big and small screen, Ghostbusters has a lengthy video game history, ranging from early arcade-style adaptations to 2009’s acclaimed Ghostbusters: The Video Game. More recently, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed turned ghost hunting into an asymmetrical multiplayer experience, while 2023’s VR title Rise of the Ghost Lord offered a new campaign built around a San Francisco Ghostbusters team. However, Ghostbusters’ next foray into gaming will be a major crossover with one of the most seasoned franchises in history (via NME).
Ghostbusters Officially Returns In Unexpected New Crossover Event
Ghostbusters is officially crossing over with Monopoly GO! as part of the mobile game’s new Monster Mash season, which runs from September 23 through November 25. The collaboration brings several recognizable pieces of the franchise into Monopoly GO!, with players exploring New York City, collecting themed items, and participating in limited-time activities inspired by the original films.
Among the biggest additions is a Ghostbusters-themed Racers event set around the rooftop of 550 Central Park West, recreating the setting of the climactic confrontation with Gozer from the original movie. Players can race in themed vehicles while the battle unfolds around them. A Partners event will also let friends work together to construct attractions based on familiar Ghostbusters characters, locations, and supernatural encounters.
Perhaps the most fitting addition is the Treasures event, which takes players inside the iconic Ghostbusters Firehouse and replaces the usual excavation mechanic with a Proton Blaster used to clear slime and uncover recognizable pieces of ghost-hunting equipment.
Ghostbusters’ Monster Mash Appearance Is Just The Beginning
The crossover is only one half of Monopoly GO!‘s broader Monster Mash celebration. Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters is joining the game alongside Ghostbusters, with HUNTR/X and the Saja Boys appearing across their own mini-games and events. The season also introduces Halloween-focused social features, community-designed Tokens, player-inspired Stickers, and a new collection of themed Sticker Sets for both crossover franchises.
For anyone unfamiliar with it, Monopoly GO! is Scopely and Hasbro’s free-to-play mobile reinterpretation of the classic board game, released globally in 2023. Players still roll dice, travel around boards, earn Monopoly money, and build their fortunes, preserving the basic rhythm and imagery of the traditional board game. However, it expands that foundation through collectible Stickers, elaborate landmarks, limited-time events, Bank Heists, Shut Downs, and cooperative or competitive activities with other players.
The result is less a direct digital recreation of a traditional Monopoly match and more a constantly evolving mobile spin on its core ideas. It comes highly rated on both Google Play and the App Store, and the upcoming Ghostbusters crossover is the perfect time for new players to dive in and see what’s on offer.
