Jim Carrey‘s hit fantasy movie is thriving yet again now that it has joined a new streaming platform.
The iconic star rose to fame in the 1990s thanks to comedies such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, and Liar Liar. However, he has proven himself to be one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors. There are a number of serious Jim Carrey movies that are also iconic, including The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Over the years he has dabbled in many genres and subgenres, including superhero movies (Batman Forever, Kick-Ass 2), Dr. Seuss adaptations (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Horton Hears a Who), horror (The Bad Batch), and fantasy.
One such fantasy movie is the 2024 video game adaptation Sonic the Hedgehog 3, in which Jim Carrey reprises his role as the villainous Dr. Ivo Robotnik, which he originated in the original 2020 movie and its 2022 sequel. In theaters, it grossed $492.2 million, becoming Jim Carrey’s highest-grossing movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation) and the 10th highest-grossing release of the year worldwide. The movie, which is climbing the streaming charts two years later, also stars James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Krysten Ritter, and the voices of Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, and Keanu Reeves.
Although Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is not available on Netflix in the United States (where it is streaming on numerous platforms, including Paramount+ and Prime Video), it just joined the streaming platform’s library in a number of international territories. This has landed it at No. 8 on Netflix’s daily chart of their most-watched movies worldwide at the time of writing, alongside major, newer, titles such as Enola Holmes 3 (No. 1), Voicemails for Isabelle (No. 2), and Little Brother (No. 3).
The fact that the newest Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been able to accomplish this in spite of not being available in the United States (which is one of Netflix’s core markets) is due to the fact that it is a high-performer in the majority of the regions in which it is available. It is in the Top 10 in more than two dozen individual regions, peaking at No. 2 in Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, Serbia, and Slovakia.
In all of those territories, it is only behind Enola Holmes 3, the latest installment in the Millie Bobby Brown young adult mystery franchise, which dropped globally on the platform on July 1.
This Netflix streaming performance is further proof that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a hit by any measure. It is merely cementing its status at this point, as it has already proven its worth so much that the sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is currently in post-production, with Jim Carrey set to play Dr. Robotnik for the fourth time, opposite returning stars Marsden, Sumpter, Schwartz, O’Shaughnessey, Elba, Reeves, and franchise newcomers Kristen Bell as Amy Rose and Ben Kingsley, Nick Offerman, Matt Berry, and Richard Ayoade in unknown roles.
