Marvel’s VisionQuest has already fueled theories about the secretive client.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe series serves as the third and final installment in the WandaVision trilogy, following WandaVision and Agatha All Along. Paul Bettany returns as White Vision, continuing his story as he tries to understand his past while navigating the artificial intelligence personalities living inside his mind. However, the first two episodes introduce a dangerous new threat when a mysterious Client places a bounty on Vision, leading the mercenary Paladin (Todd Stashwick) to track him down.
In an interview with New Rockstars, VisionQuest creator and showrunner Terry Matalas addressed some of the biggest fan theories about the mysterious Client’s identity. He confirmed it’s not Vision’s son, Billy, and assured that the series won’t go down the same rabbit hole WandaVision did with “the Mephisto thing.”
“It’s not Billy. But it’s also… I don’t want everybody to go down to the Mephisto thing. It’s not that kind of story. It is important but… That’s all I will say. There’s some time before you need to obsess over it. But it’s not Billy.”
Moments later, Matalas also confirmed that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom isn’t the mysterious Client, ending speculation about a potential connection to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Although the showrunner didn’t reveal who is responsible, his comments make it clear the Client’s identity matters to the story, even if it doesn’t involve a major MCU character.
Despite Matalas ruling out Billy and Doctor Doom, several possibilities remain for who could be behind the bounty on Vision. The first two episodes establish that Paladin has been hired to capture the former Avenger, but his employer’s identity and motivations remain unknown.
One possibility is Sharon Carter, the Power Broker in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. With VisionQuest featuring Madripoor, where Carter previously operated, the former SHIELD character could potentially have connections to the mysterious Client. Another theory points to Xu Xialing, who took control of the Ten Rings organization following the events of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Paladin’s apparent connection to the organization could make her another potential suspect.

Meanwhile, Ultron (James Spader) remains a possibility, particularly after revealing Vision’s location to Paladin. The villain’s return marks his first major MCU appearance since 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, although he has denied being responsible for the bounty. He defends himself, saying he only gave the location to push Vision’s evolution, but recent events could make his betrayal possible.
Nevertheless, audiences shouldn’t expect the Client’s identity to be a massive surprise cameo. Instead, the mystery could be more closely connected to Vision’s personal journey, with the show’s many MCU Easter eggs and references already highlighting his complicated history, memories, and family.
With episodes 3 and 4, titled “Reboot” and “Malware,” having premiered on October 20, VisionQuest still has plenty of time to reveal who is behind the bounty. For now, the Disney+ series has ruled out two major suspects while leaving the identity of Vision’s mysterious enemy unanswered.
VisionQuest releases new episodes on Tuesdays at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT on Disney+.
