The Marvel Cinematic Universe is bringing back a major Avenger to Disney+.
The MCU timeline will see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes face off with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom this December in Avengers: Doomsday, which will serve as one of the penultimate Phase 6 films. However, before the highly anticipated team-up film arrives, a crucial character of the team is getting his next era in the franchise this fall.
In a new interview with Polygon, VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas was asked where the latest MCU drama takes place in the overall timeline. The creative confirmed that “Years have passed since WandaVision. I would say we’re about current with Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
The VisionQuest TV show will see Paul Bettany’s resurrected player searching for what is next after being brought back to life, with the story taking place heavily inside his mind, which is how various A.I.s from the MCU franchise are showing up in human form. When asked if the WandaVision spinoff will do commentary on A.I., especially in the current climate, Matalas stated, “We do touch upon it in the way that AI will eventually be a reflection of us in some ways. We are essentially its parents and we need to raise it right and not give it necessarily too much freedom yet, and make sure we’re bringing it into the world in a responsible way.”
However, he stressed that while “there are themes that run through it,” he cautioned viewers that “it’s not a commentary on how AI has integrated into society.” The show will feature characters like F.R.I.D.A.Y., U, E.D.I.T.H., and J.A.R.V.I.S., while James Spader will reprise his role as Ultron, who will also be seen in a human version.
When asked if people will need to have seen WandaVision and Agatha All Along to be able to follow VisionQuest, Matalas shared how “we definitely catch the audience up very simply. So it’s not a hard and fast rule that they need to watch. If anything, WandaVision, for sure, because it’s definitely a sequel to WandaVision.” He also teased that “there are definitely elements of Agatha that are touched upon, but you can easily grasp what’s going on if you don’t have time.”
The Agatha All Along plot point that he is most likely referring to is the reintroduction of Tommy Maximoff, a.k.a. Speed, who will be portrayed by Ruaridh Mollica. As Tommy’s soul got placed in Thomas Shepherd, the Disney+ Original will show the Young Avenger as a teenager, similar to how Joe Locke’s Billy Maximoff was reintroduced in Kathryn Hahn’s offshoot.
Whether or not VisionQuest will tie into upcoming MCU movies, including Avengers. Doomsday remains to be seen. However, it’s worth noting that the show will conclude only a few weeks before the film arrives in theaters, which definitely raises the question of whether there may be at least some way that the Disney+ property connects to Joe and Anthony Russo’s latest Marvel feature.
VisionQuest is set to premiere on October 14 on Disney+.
